At the start of the year, the authorities of several European countries including France declared that the use of Google services on a website is a violation of data protection laws (GDPR), and sanctioned sites which used these services. The CNIL has therefore launched formal notice procedures against several websites, considering that the transfer of data to the United States is illegal under the GDPR.
This immediately impacts any owner of a European site using Google Analytics, the Google Fonts service, Facebook codes, etc.
According to European authorities, the United States does not guarantee European citizens the protection of their data. Regulators note that Google Analytics cannot “exclude the possibility of access by American intelligence services to this data”. As a result, the service carries a risk for French users. The sites thus violate Article 44 et seq. of the GDPR relating to the general principle on data transfer.
As part of our strategy of controlling our infrastructures (all our servers are with 100% French operators and strictly located in France), IPSO-FACTO has used its own web traffic analysis servers for many years, based on MATOMO open source technology. We can therefore now offer all our customers a legal and secure alternative!
